A song that sat in the archive for a quarter of a century has finally surfaced. Britney Spears has released “She’ll Never Be Me,” a previously unheard track from the sessions for her 2001 album Britney that was co-written with Justin Timberlake, her partner at the time.
The song arrives as a preview of the album’s 25th anniversary edition, which is set for release on November 6. Timberlake is credited as a co-composer and co-lyricist, alongside songwriter-producers Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs, the team known as Riprock ‘n’ Alex G, who worked extensively with ‘N Sync during that era.
Five vault tracks
According to a post on Spears’ Facebook page, “She’ll Never Be Me” is one of five unreleased recordings on the expanded set. The others are “Am I a Sinner,” “When I Say So,” “My Big Secret” and a full-length version of “Right Now (Taste the Victory),” a song previously heard in a 2002 Pepsi commercial.
The rollout has been notably quiet. Outside of promotion on Spears’ official Facebook and TikTok accounts, there was no splashy announcement, and the singer herself does not appear to have commented publicly on the release. Variety noted that these are the first previously unreleased Spears recordings to come out since her 2023 single with will.i.am, “Mind Your Business.”
An album that defined an era
Britney, her third studio album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, was led by the Neptunes-produced “I’m a Slave 4 U” and earned a Grammy nomination. It marked her shift toward a more adult pop sound and remains a key chapter of her catalog.
The anniversary edition lands at a time when new music from Spears looks unlikely. In 2024 she said she would never return to the music industry, describing herself as a ghostwriter who prefers writing for other artists. Her most recent studio album, Glory, came out a decade ago, which makes archival releases like this the main way fans are hearing anything new from her.
