Harry Styles marked two years since the death of Liam Payne by sharing something he had kept to himself. During the encore of his Friday, October 16, concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Styles premiered “What Is Enough,” telling the crowd he wrote it for his friend around two years ago.
Payne, Styles’ bandmate in One Direction, died on October 16, 2024, after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. He was 31.
A quiet pause in a 30-night run
Styles eased into the moment with what first sounded like his usual goodnight message, asking fans to look after one another and to tell friends, and even strangers, that they love them. He then talked about what the venue means to him and the many people who helped him get there, before saying that he had lost one of those friends two years earlier.
The song itself was spare, an acoustic ballad sung almost under his breath and addressed directly to Payne, with lines that appear to recall the funeral. Between the soft delivery and the size of the room, fans have struggled to piece together every lyric. Styles then went back to his scheduled set, ending the night with “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture.”
The New York shows form a 30-night stand within Styles’ larger Together, Together residency run, which covers 50 concerts in seven cities behind his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, released March 6. No studio release of “What Is Enough” has been announced.
The tribute follows comments Styles made in March to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, when he spoke about how odd it felt for the public to take ownership of part of his grief, and said the best way to honor friends who have died is to live fully.
