Gerard Way used Saturday’s My Chemical Romance show at San Antonio’s Alamodome to float the prospect of a new studio album — the band’s first full-length in more than 16 years, according to Rolling Stone Canada’s Daniel Kreps.
MCR has spent the past year on the Long Live the Black Parade Tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of 2006’s The Black Parade. Their last LP remains 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. After a mid-2010s breakup and a 2019 reunion, the group’s only new studio track has been 2022’s “The Foundations of Decay.”
“You guys deserve another record”
“We should probably make more songs,” Way told the crowd. He called “The Foundations of Decay” “really awesome when we kept doing it,” then added that life got in the way — but that the band “kind of always wanted to make another record, so we hope to,” because fans “kept us alive for so long that you guys deserve another record.”
Saturday closed the North American leg. Still ahead: Louisville’s Louder Than Life, Sacramento’s Aftershock, a five-night Hollywood Bowl residency ending Halloween (October 31), then a monthlong Southeast Asia run wrapping in late November — the window Way’s comments imply for getting back into the studio.
What it would mean
A new MCR album would be the first since the Killjoys era and the first written after years of stadium-scale Black Parade nostalgia. Way stopped short of a timeline or title, but for a fanbase that has kept the reunion alive on the road, the Alamodome aside was the clearest public signal yet that more songs — not just more anniversary dates — are on the table.
