Spotify Tests Premium Early Access in India With 72-Hour Release Window

Spotify is piloting Premium Early Access in India, a release window that can put selected new music in Premium accounts up to 72 hours before free-tier listeners get the same tracks. The trial covers Premium Standard, Premium Platinum, and Premium Student plans.

Participation is optional: artists and labels work with Spotify to nominate titles, and the music is not locked permanently. After the short head start, the same releases open to everyone on the platform.

The move lands as the Indian industry pushes harder for paid streaming. RouteNote cites EY-IMI findings that most smartphone users there listen to music, yet only a minority have ever paid for a service, with paid subscriptions estimated around 14 million in 2025 and room to grow toward the high twenties by 2028.

Universal Music Group has separately outlined 72-hour paid-first windows for major domestic and international releases in India across streaming services, pointing to earlier China experiments. For most independents outside the test, RouteNote stresses distribution and fan engagement basics remain unchanged.
