Sony Music and UMG Sue Suno Again Over v6: ‘Fruit of the Same Poisoned Tree’

Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group filed a fresh copyright complaint against AI music platform Suno on Friday in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, arguing that the company’s newly launched v6 model family still rests on unauthorized copies of the labels’ recordings. The 45-page suit arrives more than two years after the majors — joined then by Warner Music Group — first sued Suno over alleged unlicensed training, and it centers on the claim that building a “new” system atop outputs from earlier, contested models does not clear the infringement.

In the filing, the plaintiffs describe v6 as the fruit of the same poisoned tree,” saying Suno’s own statements that the latest models drew on user interactions with prior versions amount to laundering, not a clean restart. They allege Suno copied 60,202 of their sound recordings — a figure they say still represents only a fraction of the works at issue — and ask the court for a finding of infringement, statutory damages, and attorneys fees. Suno has partnered with Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe on the v6 launch and says those models were trained on licensed partner content, community signals, and internal development work.

A Suno spokesperson called the labels’ theory “fundamentally flawed on both the facts and the law, emphasizing that prompts naming artists are meant to help users learn musical language rather than clone protected works. The new case follows a separate August ruling in the original Massachusetts litigation that barred the labels from adding tens of thousands of extra recordings to that docket and left open the path for a standalone suit.
