Every year, a pile of music money never finds a name. Collection societies call it the black box: mechanicals, performances and neighboring rights that were paid in, then parked because the metadata did not match a person. A platform now sitting in the current music-news cycle, Notes.fm, is trying to turn that pile into a search box.

The product comes from Stem co-founder Tim Luckow with Derek Davies and Montalis Anglade. An artist types a name. The software scans streaming services, performing-rights organizations and registries including the Mechanical Licensing Collective, looking for recordings and compositions that are earning but not paying the right party. Where it finds a gap — a missing ISRC, a stale split, an unregistered work — it walks the user through a fix so future money routes correctly, and so past unmatched income can be claimed.

During a year-long beta with more than 400 acts, from James Blake and Girl in Red to the Howlin’ Wolf estate, Notes.fm says it flagged over $10 million tied to songs that had already passed 50 billion streams, about $15,500 per artist who used it to clean things up. Pricing starts at $5 a month. The company does not take a percentage of recovered royalties, which is the usual tax on this kind of treasure hunt.

Whether a subscription can outrun a century of broken registries is the test. Black-box pools are not a glitch; they are what happens when fifty systems each need the same work registered a slightly different way. Notes.fm’s pitch is that the artist should not have to become a collection-society clerk to get paid. If the public launch holds, the interesting number will not be the marketing average. It will be how much of that $10 million actually clears into bank accounts.
